So, you’re trying to market your therapy practice with the most effective marketing strategies, but every time you sit down to write a post, update your website, or (gasp) record a reel, your brain chimes in with: Is this the right niche? Is this writing good enough? Will other therapists judge me?
If that sounds familiar, congrats! You’re officially a human therapist with a human brain! And also, welcome to the perfectionism trap, where overthinking keeps you stuck and not marketing your practice the way you know you should.
Here’s the deal: effective marketing strategies don’t require perfection—they require action. The goal isn’t 100% perfect; it’s 80% good enough so you can actually put yourself out there, attract clients, and build your dream practice.
If you’ve been sitting in freeze mode, this one’s for you.
Let’s be real: perfectionistic tendencies may as well be one of the criteria for becoming a therapist. I see it ALL the time (and maybe have struggled with it myself), yet overcoming it as well as the inevitable imposter syndrome, were never really discussed in our grad programs. We learned how to help clients, not how to write compelling Instagram captions, a conversion-worthy Psychology Today profile, or optimize a website for SEO. So when it comes time to market ourselves, many therapists spiral into:
Perfectionism tricks you into believing that if your marketing isn’t flawless, it’s not worth doing. But here’s the truth: your business and your marketing is a living, breathing thing. It evolves. The sooner you let go of the idea that it has to be perfect from day one, the sooner you’ll start attracting clients.
There are literally a hundred ways to market your practice, from SEO, blogging, Instagram, TikTok, networking, workshops, email lists. Trying to do all of them at once? That’s a one-way ticket to burnout town.
Instead, pick two marketing strategies that sound the most doable (or dare I say… fun?). Master those first. Once you’re comfortable, you can always add more.
Here are some solid choices:
If you love writing (or at least don’t hate it), start with a blog. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) helps potential clients find you when they Google things like “anxiety therapist in [your city]” or “how to stop overthinking everything.”
How to start:
If you don’t mind social media, pick Instagram (if your ideal clients are on it) or LinkedIn (if you want to network and get referrals).
How to start:
If social media makes you want to throw your phone into the ocean, go old school. Introduce yourself to other therapists, doctors, and community groups. One strong referral source can send you clients for years.
How to start:
No matter which strategy you pick, just start somewhere. Marketing is part strategy and part experiment—there’s no one right way to do it.
Here’s the marketing mantra you need to tattoo on your brain:
“80% is the goal, not 100%.”
Your first blog post? It won’t be your best one. Your first Instagram reel? Maybe a little awkward. Your website copy? It’ll evolve.
And that’s normal.
You can only refine something once it’s out there. That last 20% (the tweaks, the optimizations, the “perfecting”) can’t happen until you actually start.
Perfectionism says: “This isn’t good enough yet.”
Success says: “It’s good enough for now—let’s get it out there.”
Feeling stuck? Try this:
One of my students filled her caseload with only a few hundred Instagram followers. Another got a media feature just by posting consistently and a reporter reached out to her. Neither of them waited for things to be perfect—they just started.
Marketing your therapy practice doesn’t have to be a perfectionist nightmare. Keep it simple:
The more you do, the clearer things become. Your dream clients are out there—you just have to let them know you exist. Effective marketing strategies are not some hidden secret – it’s about taking action and finding out the best thing for your practice.
Now go post that thing, publish that blog, send that email. You’re ready.
