Want to know how to market a private practice on a limited budget? You’re in the right place! Starting and maintaining a thriving private practice doesn’t have to break your bank. I’m all about keeping costs low in business and fortunately for therapists, it’s easy to do so! In fact, some of the most effective approaches to marketing are low-cost, grounded, and aligned with who you are as a therapist.
Here’s how to attract the clients you’re meant to serve using four powerful, budget-friendly strategies that you can start implementing TODAY:
When you try to speak to everyone in the copy on your website, the caption on your instagram, or with your Psychology Today bio, you’re actually speaking to no one. Vague marketing = confused audience. Clarity in your niche and how you communicate who you are best fit to serve helps you show up confidently and helps the right people find you easily.
If you need help with this: Think back to one client you love or loved working with. The sessions that gave you energy and put you into that ideal flow state as a therapist. This one person can become your guidepost for everything (while maintaining HIPAA of course). Imagine that you are speaking directly to them in all of your marketing. I promise you will still attract a variety of folks (no two humans are the same, after all), but this makes your messaging super CLEAR to those who see it.
Local visibility is super important for therapists because we are commonly licensed in one or only a few states. Even if you are a telehealth-only therapist, local SEO (search engine optimization) can seriously help you get found.
When someone in your area Google’s “anxiety therapist near me” and you are a therapist who works with folks with anxiety, you want your website to pop up! How do you do this? A solid Google Business Profile (GBP). It’s free, powerful, and often overlooked by therapists in private practice.
You can either set up a new GBP or claim your business by going to: https://business.google.com/us/business-profile/ then follow every step to fill out a complete profile for your business. To optimize it for SEO, you want to be sure to include keywords that your clients are searching for. Include words like “counseling,” “counselor,” “counselor in [your area],” “therapy for kids in [your area],” etc. Then, upload 5-7 high quality photos of yourself, your office, your logo, or anything else that is relevant to your practice. It may take a couple of days for these changes to take effect, so the sooner you do this step, the better. Also be sure to add Google updates! Once a week is sufficient. Google prefers quality over quantity.
As a therapist, I strongly believe that you are your own brand — yes, YOU. Being a therapist becomes something we embody. It becomes a part of our identity. Being in this field and working with humans through their darkest moments changes you – and if you’ve been in this field long enough, you know there’s no denying that.
We bring not only our education, but also our life experiences, our beliefs, our values, our emotional expressions, our tone of voice, our style, our personality — allllll of this is part of who you are as a therapist. All of this is your brand.
People are more attracted to authenticity now than in the past, especially when searching for a therapist. The blank-slate therapist persona is quickly going out of style. Clients today want authenticity, relatability, connection, and maybe even a laugh or two between them and the therapist. Think about how you can incorporate more of YOU into your work (with clinical appropriateness) and ask yourself if you are truly practicing what you preach. If you ask your clients to do an intervention or exercise would you do it? I hope the answer is “yes.”
Real is memorable. It’s what people want and what they respond to — and it doesn’t cost a cent.
I often see therapists who rely too heavily on directories like Psychology Today or Facebook groups for seeking referrals. However, the BEST way to set up your practice so referrals come in on autopilot long-term is good ol’ fashioned networking!
This doesn’t have to mean attending a huge networking group where you hide in the back corner hoping someone talks to you. Therapists are great at 1:1 and small groups so use that to your advantage. Search for local small practices that align with your values. This could be a small Family Practice, an indpendent Physical Therapist office, an independent Psychiatric NP, a Naturopathic Doctor, Acupuncturist, and more. Functional, integrative, or holistic providers tend to want to connect more with therapists because they, too, practice from a mind-body approach. Think about how you can support THEM when you reach out. Make this referral relationship mutually beneficial.
To set up a meeting – whether by Zoom or at a local coffee shop – find their email address and send something like:
“I’m [your name], a therapist specializing in [niche]. I noticed your clinic emphasizes [value they highlight], and I’d love to find out more about what you do. I think our specialties could align. Would you be open to a quick meetup?”
If they don’t respond right away (or ever), don’t stress. People are busy. You can send a follow up email or two to see if they are interested. Otherwise, just move on to the next potential connection. If you do happen to meet up, be sure to add their information to a contacts list so you can continue to keep touch. I like to send my community contacts an email once a quarter to say hi, ask how their business is going, and offer any information about what’s new in my practice. One well-nurtured connection can bring you years of referrals.
These four strategies—niche clarity, local SEO, authentic branding, and relationship building—create a foundation for a sustainable, thriving private practice without spending a ton of money or mental energy.
